
Lafayette, LA – Fire Chief Robert P. Benoit will retire on August 15, 2025, ending a distinguished 46-year career in fire service.
Chief Benoit began his journey on May 3, 1979, turning a childhood dream into a lifelong commitment to public safety. Appointed Fire Chief in 1993, he led the Lafayette Fire Department for over 30 years, building a strong, well-trained, and financially stable team dedicated to excellence and innovation.
“I’m proud to leave behind a department that reflects the passion and professionalism of its people,” said Chief Benoit. “It’s been an exciting and rewarding career.”
Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet praised Benoit’s decades of leadership, saying, “He built a department that leads the state and sets a standard for others.”
Chief Benoit will help select his successor to ensure a smooth transition. After retirement, he will join Acadian Ambulance as Fire Liaison Supervisor, continuing to support Lafayette Parish through emergency preparedness efforts.
