Lafayette, LA – Fire Chief Robert P. Benoit will retire on August 15, 2025, ending a distinguished 46-year career in fire service.

Chief Benoit began his journey on May 3, 1979, turning a childhood dream into a lifelong commitment to public safety. Appointed Fire Chief in 1993, he led the Lafayette Fire Department for over 30 years, building a strong, well-trained, and financially stable team dedicated to excellence and innovation.

“I’m proud to leave behind a department that reflects the passion and professionalism of its people,” said Chief Benoit. “It’s been an exciting and rewarding career.”

Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet praised Benoit’s decades of leadership, saying, “He built a department that leads the state and sets a standard for others.”

Chief Benoit will help select his successor to ensure a smooth transition. After retirement, he will join Acadian Ambulance as Fire Liaison Supervisor, continuing to support Lafayette Parish through emergency preparedness efforts.

Lafayette Consolidated Government thanks Chief Benoit for his years of service. Details on a retirement celebration will be shared soon.
