Lafayette Holi Festival 2020 is canceled.

Lafayette Holi Fest is celebrating its 10th year in Acadiana on Saturday, March 28th, 2020, at Girard Park from 11: 00 am to 4 pm – Be prepared to get covered in a rainbow of COLORS! Admission is FREE and the event is fun for all ages.

What is Holi Fest?

“Holi” is a Hindu religious festival, also known as the Festival of Colors. It marks the passage of winter and commemorates the beginning of Spring.  Holi is usually in March on the last full moon of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month. It is mostly celebrated in India and parts of Southeast Asia, celebrating it has become more popular worldwide.  The Holi festival is also rooted in Hindu mythology and celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

The timing Holi is very close to Easter, but they’re a little different:

1. For Easter, you color eggs – For Holi you color people!

2. Easter egg hunts are usually for children – Holi is an event for anyone…with an inner child!

3. For Easter, you dress your best – For Holi… you should NOT wear your best unless you want to cover it in colored powder!

Colored powder can be purchased in these little baggies at the festival!

It’s probably pretty obvious from the photos – Holi is literally celebrated “WITH” colors. At Holi Fest, it is perfectly acceptable to throw colored powder on other people, in fact, it’s encouraged.

Parents, no need to worry… It’s KID-SAFE!! The color they use at the Lafayette Holi Fest celebration is called “Gulal” which is made of corn starch, food coloring, and fragrance – all non-hazardous. Kid tested, mother approved!

Acadiana residents Matt, Charlette, and their son Lucas having a blast with colors at Holi Fest!

Highlights of the festival include music with a live DJ, dance, performances, drummer (Dholi)

While the festival itself is FREE to attend – the colored powder is not free, but very inexpensive to buy. There will also be Indian food, pizza, beer, and more for purchase while you’re there.

Here are some Holi Fest Survival Tips:

1. Wear solid white or black (colored powder shows up best on those)

2. Wear sunblock

3. Protect your eyes with sunglasses

4. Bring towels for your car so you don’t ruin your seats after

5. Bring wet wipes to clean your hands and face

6. (optional) Wear a face mask to keep from getting color in your nose and mouth if you really want to.

The meaning behind Colors of Holi:

Blue is the color of the gods.

Green is the color of nature.

Red is the color of festivals and weddings and signifies passion.

Yellow signifies warmth.

Orange is the color of ambition.

They also have purple colored powder too, but there is no information on what that color means.
