Now is the time to be an active part the change you want to see in young black men in our area in the future. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana is launching a call-to-action for Black men and men of color to step up and become mentors for the boys in the program.
Over 60% of the little brothers on their waiting list are young Black boys who are “facing societal and racial barriers”, and need a positive adult male role model. You could be that role model. All it takes is being consistent and putting in some quality time and effort to make a lasting impact on the life of a young boy.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana strives to pair Black boys with Black mentors as it is easier for the little brother to identify with a Big Brother of the same race – they can see themselves in them.
The organization offers four ways to volunteer:
E-mentoring: A virtual platform for mentoring.
Community Based: Spending time together twice a month doing activities you both enjoy.
Sports Buddies: Participating in a pre-facilitated sports activities twice a month
Club Based: Spending time together once a week at the Boys and Girls Club Granberry Unit
Volunteers must be 18 years old or older. Other requirements could vary depending on the program type chosen. Volunteers must complete an online orientation and fill out an application. A virtual interview and online training must be completed, and a screening process (with criminal history background check, fingerprinting and three positive references)
By becoming a Big at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana, you could help change the future of a child – and feel good about working to make a positive change in your community! For more information and to apply go to http://www.acadianabigs.com/volunteer
