The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana is warning resident to be wary of scams involving deliveries. Thieves and con-artists have developed ways to steal personal information through shipment scams.

According to the BBB, one scam using text messages and emails to trick you. Look out for fake messages that appear to be from delivery companies. The text or email will usually contain a “tracking link” with a message that states the shipper is trying to deliver a package but needs updated information in order to proceed. The link will take you to another page that prompts you to enter your personal information or the link will download virus software to your device.

A scammer contacted a resident in Acadiana posing as a representative from Amazon. The scammer told the victim that there was a false charge on their account and in order to correct the matter, they needed to confirm their information. Luckily, the victim looked up the number on the Caller ID and it did not match with Amazon’s company number. Then she checked her account, realized there was no unauthorized charge.

Another way scammers are attempted to trick people involves deliveries. The criminal will usually leave a “missed delivery” note on your front door. The note will direct the victim to call a number to schedule a time for delivery. The phone number in the note is usually a fake number and another way con-artists are attempting to obtain your personal information.

The final way people are getting taken advantage of is a little more straightforward. Criminals are simply swiping packages from the doorstep of a home. The BBB reports that some thieves are actually following delivery trucks and snatching boxes when the worker leaves the scene.

The BBB of Acadiana offers advice on how to protect yourself from getting your packages stolen. First of all, if the item is valuable, be sure to buy shipping insurance and always get a tracking number. Be wary of weird texts, calls, and emails that notify of missed deliveries. Most companies will leave a delivery note on your door. And if you receive this type of note, look over it carefully. The BBB suggests requiring a signature for delivery of the package. This way it will not be left unattended.

It is also a good idea to have packages delivered to your job or neighbor’s home, if you know for sure that you will not be home when the package arrives.
