Beware “Free” Solar Panel Scams

Escalating utility costs have lots of folks looking into solar energy. Rising popularity has led scammers to infiltrate the market. Offers of “Free” solar panels that seem too good to be true usually are. The Better Business Bureau warns homeowners to beware.


Here’s the ruse. Someone contacts you via telephone, email, social media, or in person. The individual represents themself to be a salesperson for a solar energy company. They tell you there’s an incredible, limited-time offer. They then ask for your banking information, “to see if you qualify.”

Here’s the rub. They ask for payment upfront, promising you’ll get a rebate from a government program that doesn’t exist. The BBB advises you to do your research, resist high-pressure tactics, and get competing offers.
