Louisiana has more than its share of inclement weather. This sometimes causes interruptions in wireless phone service. The pandemic has also been hugely inconvenient. You may receive a text that appears to be from your wireless provider, apologizing for the inconvenience and offering a reward. This has particularly been the case with AT&T. The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana warns it may be a scam.

The message will contain a link to the “reward.” Chris Babin, with the BBB, says the link will take you to a lookalike website that asks for your personal information.

He recommends the following: Don’t click on links from strangers. Many companies engage in SMS marketing. Remember consumers must opt in to receive messages.

Call the company directly. Confirm the deal before you accept. Send an email, or call to inquire.
