Could the UFC come to Lafayette for a Poirier fight?

There’s no doubt that Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier is a legend in Acadiana.

Not only will he go down as a Top 10 UFC Lightweight fighter of all time, but the Northside High product also does so much for the local community through his Good Fight Foundation. From backpack drives to meet and greets and so much more, The Diamond is truly about Acadiana.

This is why it would make perfect sense for what could be his final fight in the octagon to take place at a building that has meant so much to Acadiana in its 40 years of existence: The Cajundome.

Poirier took to Social Media over the weekend when people started discussing the idea of his fight being in New Orleans, to which the former UFC Interim Lightweight Champ said “bring the UFC to the Cajundome”

This would make a ton of sense from both an economic standpoint and a storyline. What better way to bow out of your illustrious career in MMA than in front of your home fans? To be honest, the Cajundome may not have enough seats after all, given the number of people that would be in line to see it.

With a capacity of nearly 12,000 and an additional 3,000 or so seats on the floor around the octagon, the Cajundome feels on par with a majority of the venues the UFC does for its smaller UFC Fight Night events that air on ESPN or ESPN+.

Could the City of Lafayette get its hand on a UFC card featuring The Diamond? If this would truly be Poirier’s final fight, you would be hard-pressed to find a better way to end it.
