It’s official! Louisiana has a new holiday to celebrate. Governor John Bel Edwards is scheduled to announce that October 24 is now, Red Beans and Rice Day in the Bayou state. This proclamation is going to take place on the steps of the Capitol in Baton Rouge.

Red Beans and Rice has been a tradition in Louisiana households since the 19th century. In the early days, Red Beans and Rice was usually served on Mondays. This is because Monday used to be laundry day, a busy day for families. And Red beans and rice was a cheap and easy meal that could feed a large family.

Two Louisiana brands, Cajun Country Rice and Camellia Beans have joined forcese to keep the tradition alive and promote Red Beans and Rice Mondays. Both of these Louisiana companies are family owned and managed to stay intact through numerous hardships including ecomomic depressions, pandemics, floods and hurricanes.

Plus consuming red beans and rice is good for Louisiana’s economy.

The USA Rice Federation has reported that Louisiana is in 3rd place when it comes to growing rice and is a big contributor to Louisiana’s state economy creating lots of jobs.

Cajun Country Rice and Camellia Beans will celebrate with Governor John Bel-Edwards and other elected officials and chefs when October 24 is offically declared Red Beans and Rice Day in Baton Rouge. The two family owned companies will also make a donation to Second Harvest Food Band. Following the proclamation, red beans & rice will be served to guests.
