Lafayette Sheriff Warns Of Telephone Scam

Blog by Steve Wiley

Scammers are once again targeting citizens of Lafayette Parish. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office warns citizens that individuals are calling residents representing themselves as law enforcement officers.

The caller will tell the intended victim they owe a fine or other penalty and demand payment. The scammer further directs that a form of untraceable, non refundable payment method be used. This would include gift cards or preloaded debit cards. Intimidation tactics come into play, such as the threat of immediate arrest.

Officials with LPSO remind citizens they will never ask for any form of payment via telephone. If you receive such a call, You’re asked to hang up, and  contact the Sheriff’s office immediately. You can reach them at (337) 232-9211.
