When I looked up the definition of funk, I really expected to see a picture of James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Confunkshun, The Barkays, Earth Wind & Fire or Prince. Then I went to Wikipedia and there they were, all of my funk favorites and then some. Did you know that Chaka Khan is considered the “Queen Of Funk?”.
When I think of funk, I think of Parliament Funkadelic. My very first concert was Parliament -Funkadelic with Bootsy Collins in St. Louis in the Summer of 1975. I was forever changed when I saw the Mothership land. “The Mothership” from the P-Funk tour is docked in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. It is an important part of our music history. Long live the funk.
At 75 the master of the funk George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic are still tearing the roof off the sucker and spreading that P-Funk with tour dates around the world. Bootsy Collins who is now 64, got his start as a bass player in the 70’s with James Brown he is still “playing lighting licks” and Stretchin’ Out in Bootsy’s Rubber Band on tour. My music mottos: “Whatever ya do ya gotta make it funky” and “make my funk the p-funk, I want to get funked up” May the funk be with you!
