ST. LANDRY PARISH GOW RECAP: Opelousas Catholic defeats St. Edmund

The Opelousas Catholic Vikings bounced back from their loss with a convincing 52-30 victory over St. Edmund. With the victory, OC improved to 4-1 and 1-1 in District 5-1A play.

St. Edmund got on the board first as Wyatt Dubois scored on a one-yard touchdown run. OC responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kross Gillen to Lane Dugas.

OC started off the second quarter with three straight touchdown drives. Gillen threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Manuel, then a 60-yard and 26-yard touchdown passes to Roderick Tezeno.

St. Edmund scored on a five-yard touchdown run by Dubois, but OC followed with a 27-yard field goal by Aiden LeFleur. St. Edmund scored as time expired in the first half as Dubois returned the kick back 77 yards for a touchdown.

At the break, OC led 31-24.

The Vikings outscored the Blue Jays in the second half 21-6. Royce Butler scored touchdowns on 35 and 1-yard runs, while Dugas added a three-yard touchdown pass from Gillen in the fourth. Nathan Driggs scored a 10-yard touchdown for St. Edmund for the final score of the contest.

The two teams combined for 786 yards and 114 offensive plays.

Butler led the Vikings on the ground with 194 yards on 23 carries. Gillen completed 20-of-29 passes for 309 yards and one interception. Tezeno had seven receptions for 177 yards.

Driggs led the Blue Jays with 144 yards on 24 carries, while Nathan Zaunbrecher completed 7-of-16 passes for 66 yards and one interception.

Opelousas Catholic’s Butler was selected as Player of the Game. Butler had 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while also catching one pass for 24 yards in the victory.

This week’s contest, with Jason Burns and Chad Jones on the call, will be Natchitoches Central at Opelousas High at the newly renovated Donald Gardner Stadium. Pregame begins at 6:45 and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
