Some people never take a vacation. And by vacation, I mean, the actual physical act of packing a suitcase and taking a trip somewhere far off. There are lots of different excuses given. It’s too costly. Maybe their job is demanding. Vacations are important. When you take a vacation you are creating memories. You have something interesting to talk about with friends. And most importantly, embarking on a vacation will help you live a long and happy life.

Here’s why you should make taking a vacation a priority according to Dr. Christian Jarrett.

You need a change in the atmosphere! Not a necessarily a permanent change but a break from the same ole same. According to studies, a simple break the daily grind will give you energy and improve your mood. You will feel happy. (At least for a little while, until the “vacation high” wear off.)

There is a difference between taking a day-off and going on a vacation. So using your day off to spend the afternoon on the sofa catching up on Netflix is not the same thing. Scientist compared the emotional well-being of individuals who spent a weekend at home to those who spent a weekend away from home. Those who traveled reported a higher level of overall happiness.

Vacations give you memories and boost creativity. When you take a vacation, you usually will engage in activities that you don’t normally do. You are seeing sights that you never see. Doing these things will activate parts of the brain giving you a new outlook.  So the next time you have writers’ block and you are fresh out of ideas, take a road trip.

In a study, a company gave its employees a test that measures creativity then sent its employees on a three-week holiday trip. When the group returned, they took the test again and this time produced better more creative answers.

If you think about, even though it can be expensive to take a vacation, it is worth it. It is an investment in your health and happiness.
