The 2020 Crawfish Season Is One For The Record Books

BEWARE- This story will make you HUNGRY!

It’s going to be a delicious crawfish season! The season started off really well and because of the warmer weather, the 2020 season is shaping up to be HOT! Not only are the crawfish plentiful, but the price of the mudbugs is also really good. It is the price that has many people’s attention!

When we look back at the average price last year in comparison, in 2019 at this time the price was $4.50 and boiled crawfish cost nearly $7. Right now crawfish are selling for as low as $2.29 a pound in south Louisiana, and boiled crawfish can be found for $3.49 a pound. This explains why the lines at the drive-thru’s for crawdads extend in some cases into the streets.

Talking to a crawfish farmer in North Vermilion Parish tells me he can not remember a time when the season was so abundant. He fears a possible cold snap which could have the mudbugs dig deep and hibernate.

According to NOLA.com, one farmer near Baton Rouge, last year was selling 60-80 sacks a crawfish a week between live and boiled compared to selling near 250 sacks a week. Needless to say, they’re off to a great start. The reason for selling crawfish early in the season makes room in the ponds for other crawfish to grow larger. Too may crawfish in one area will prevent them from getting fat, the kind of fat where you love to pinch the tail and yank out that huge piece of white meat!

Prejean’s Restaurant noticed the abundance and the low price of crawfish this season which motivated the Cajun restaurant to sell boiled crawfish for the first time since 1995 when the restaurant quit selling the boiled crustacean to meet the demand for fried seafood and their delicious crawfish etouffee. This will be a season to enjoy crawfish and enjoy the low prices as we approach Good Friday and Easter when the demand is at its peak.

Ya hungry yet? I am, it’s time to pinch dat tail and suck dat head!
