The Giant Omelette Celebration is returning this weekend November 5th and 6th to downtown Abbeville. The festival was on hold for the last couple years due to the pandemic but now the family friendly 5000 egg event is back.

Abbeville’s downtown square will be surrounded with Arts and Crafts booths, antique cars, and Louisiana live music. On Sunday, be sure to arrive early to take in the preparing of the Giant Omelette. The Omelette will be prepared by a large group of chefs wearing big white hats. They use 5000 eggs and a giant black skillet.

According to the Giant Omelette’s page, the festival started as a way to united Abbeville’s French heritage and culture with a tradition practiced in France. Legend has it that an innkeeper and townspeople in the French town of Bessieres in France fed Napoleon and his army a giant omelette. After that it became a tradition to feed the poor omelettes during Easter.
