Carbon monoxide detectors will be required in Louisiana homes, effective January 1st. The new law applies to 1 and 2-family homes.

State Fire Marshal Dan Wallis recommends placing a CO detector on every level of the house, and within 10 feet of the garage.

He went on to say “These changes are the direct result of the tragic aftermath of the 2020 and 2021 hurricane disasters across our state that saw more than a dozen carbon monoxide-related deaths and dozens more hospitalizations, all attributed to both portable and standby generator use.”

The CO detector can be in combination with a smoke detector.
