This week’s book of focus is the dynamic speaker, author, pastor, Doctor Micheal Eric Dyson’s biography of Tupac Shakur titled, Holler If You Hear Me. Sure we all know that Tupac Shakur is one of the biggest stars to ever walk the earth so we assume that we know all there is to know about him, but Dyson gives us insights and perspectives that we could never imagine. Dr. Dyson does a masterful job interview some of he closest people to Tupac from friends that he had on the road as a celebrity, to his teachers from his childhood and classmates, to his rapping peers to give the reader the most well rounded view of the man that many would argue is our version of Elvis when it comes to fame and global impact.
I always love to read Dyson’s work because of his amazing word usage and you can always expand your own vocabulary just by listening to him speak or reading a few words from his works, but he also take us from the halls of academia and the pool pit to hood by still being relevant and humorous to make his points. This book was a great read and any hip hop fan could appreciate Holler If You Hear me.
