So for all my slasher film lovers and others, you know that the movie The Purge: Election Year has come out in theaters over the holiday weekend. I haven’t seen it yet, I’ve only seen the first movie, which is simply titled, The Purge. For those who are unfamiliar with the movie trilogy, the basic concept is, once a year for a 12-hour period, all crime including murder is legal.
But it seems that people are more intrigued with murdering one another over any other crime. I suppose the idea is if you get all the evil out of our system then the desire to act on it when you shouldn’t will be easier to ignore.
My question to you is, what would you do? If you had 12 hours to do whatever it is you wanted, knowing that whether there were witnesses, a video tape and confession available, you still wouldn’t be prosecuted for it let alone arrested.
Me, I would be the one trying to build an impenetrable fort, with plenty of resources to get us through 12 hours. Who would be with me? Only my kids, my mom, my sisters and their kids, because I’d hate to invite people who claim they’re scared and just want to be safe from the chaos then turn around to learn that they’re only saying that because it’s a part of their plot to kill me and my family anyway. My two sisters and I are prior military, we would train every individual from my eight-year-old son up to my mother, how to operate a firearm, for just in case something happens to my sisters and me, we would have food, entertainment and necessary resources and we would be impossible to find no matter how loud we get. And Idon’t see it as a sign of weakness, running and hiding. We wouldn’t be cowering with our tails tucked between our legs, no! I’m a survivalist not an antagonist. Not that I’m judging anyone else, I’m just saying, I want my family safe. If I know that there are regular, average day people walking around choosing to shoot up, blow up, slice and dice any and every one they come across, absent of all morality and humanity, knowing that they can look at me or even my children without an ounce of resistance, leaves me no other option than to stand my ground and protect the ones I love and trust.
Which brings me to my next thought. In the first film, (spoiler alert) there is a man running around screaming for help. But none of the other families in the neighborhood would help him. They just ignored him; they turned out their lights like some people do when they want to discourage trick or treaters from coming to their homes during Halloween. Finally, our main characters, hear the man and I believe the son ends up feeling sorry for him and lets him in the house. But by doing so, it brings on a gang of teenagers who are killing people for fun and that’s what starts the main plot of the film. The family trying to escaped these killer teenagers while also trying to figure out the stranger’s motives are.
My second question to you is, would you let him in? Would you let anyone in? What if it were a little child wandering the streets in fear, begging for refuge. Claiming her parents have been killed and she has nowhere to go. You even hear the killers getting close to her. I think I know what most of my soldiers would do.
What would I do? I don’t know.
I just pray we never resort to that as an option, period. But with the way things are going in society right now, we don’t seem to be far from the possibility. Pray people, pray.
