For lots of us, today is Christmas Eve! However, this year Hannukah officially begins at sunset, today! The holiday starts today Saturday, December 24, and ends on Monday, January 1.
The word Hanukkah, means “dedication” in Hebrew. It is the Festival of Lights. It remembers the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, and the miracle of rededicating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and restoring its menorah, or lamp. The great miracle of Hanukkah is that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day, and yet it lasted for eight full days. People celebrate Hannukah at their homes by lighting the menorah(candles). Each night, one additional candle is lit in addition to the number from the previous night. Lots of people host and attend Hannukah parties where songs are sung and games played. Many eat special foods unique to Hannukah such as potato latkes and deep fried foods. Sounds like my type of party!!
