Black History Month is a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans. Sponsored by Z1059 and Home Bank, this annual celebration is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and uplift Black excellence.
The Origins of Black History Month
Started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson as “Negro History Week,” Black History Month was officially recognized in 1976. Celebrated in February to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays, it highlights Black achievements and contributions to history. The 2025 theme, African Americans and Labor. The focus is on all the ways that all kinds of work intersects with the collective experiences of black people.

- Support Black Businesses – Shop, dine, and highlight Black-owned businesses in your community.
- Attend Events – Join cultural festivals, exhibits, and discussions that celebrate Black excellence.
- Learn & Share – Read books by Black authors, watch documentaries, or listen to Black history podcasts.
- Visit Historic Sites – Explore landmarks and museums that showcase Black history.
- Watch Inspiring Movies – Gather with family to watch films that highlight Black leaders and achievements.
