Celebrate Black History Month 2025 with Z1059 and Home Bank

Black History Month is a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans. Sponsored by Z1059 and Home Bank, this annual celebration is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and uplift Black excellence.

The Origins of Black History Month

Started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson as “Negro History Week,” Black History Month was officially recognized in 1976. Celebrated in February to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays, it highlights Black achievements and contributions to history. The 2025 theme, African Americans and Labor. The focus is on all the ways that all kinds of work intersects with the collective experiences of black people.

Ways to Celebrate

  • Support Black Businesses – Shop, dine, and highlight Black-owned businesses in your community.
  • Attend Events – Join cultural festivals, exhibits, and discussions that celebrate Black excellence.
  • Learn & Share – Read books by Black authors, watch documentaries, or listen to Black history podcasts.
  • Visit Historic Sites – Explore landmarks and museums that showcase Black history.
  • Watch Inspiring Movies – Gather with family to watch films that highlight Black leaders and achievements.

  • Selma (2014) – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s fight for voting rights.
  • Hidden Figures (2016) – The untold story of Black women at NASA.
  • 42 (2013) – Jackie Robinson’s journey in Major League Baseball.
  • Harriet (2019) – The story of abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
  • The Great Debaters (2007) – A Black debate team making history.
  • The Six Triple Eight (2024) – Tyler Perry’s tribute to the first all-Black women battalion in WWII.
  • Malcolm X (1992) – Spike Lee’s powerful biopic of Malcolm X.

  • Rosa Parks (Feb 4) – Civil rights icon.
  • Langston Hughes (Feb 1) – Renowned poet and activist.
  • Frederick Douglass (Feb 14) – Abolitionist and writer.
  • Bob Marley (Feb 6) – Reggae legend and activist.
  • Jordan Peele (Feb 21) – Award-winning filmmaker.
